This kitchen had a lot of size potential. The dropped tile ceiling, upper cabinets and peninsula separated the eating area from the cooking area and shrunk this space measurably. The dark, stained oak cabinets and parquet floors were an eye sore and the old desk had to go. In order to update the space we needed to bring in lighter colors and new materials. Good kitchen design requires more than just good aesthetics. You need to keep in mind the work triangle, how many cooks will be in the kitchen and type of serving the home owners will be doing. A custom island was made to increase the amount of food prep areas, creating space for more than 1 cook to be in the kitchen. Above the island, 2 black iron pendants were placed for more light over the prep area. A subway tile backsplash was done to make cleaning east and protect the walls from water and oil splatter. The biggest transformation was the white washed cabinets done in a satin Benjamin Moore oil based enamel, which was applied with a paint sprayer to give them a smooth, flawless finish. The old desk was removed and replaced with a built-in bench seat with bead-board surround, custom upholstery and comfy pillows. The desk was to be repurposed as a buffet and wall cabinet in the dining room. Re-purposing old items saves money and is also a great option when trying to “go green” in your home! Once the large renovations were done, the space was completed with gorgeous gray granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a new sink & faucet and cabinet hardware. Voila!
